From 1954 – The Federal Trade Commission proposes that the cigarette industry voluntarily adopt advertising standards to eliminate “all claims and implications which are questionable in light of present-day scientific knowledge.” Recent reports from scientists indicate heavy smokers have a greater chance of getting lung cancer than nonsmokers.
