She caused a sensation and a scandal. George Jorgensen Jr. went to Copenhagen, Denmark and came back to New York a sleek 95 pound woman.

She had become a pioneer of the transsexual movement.

The story was all over the newsapers as they called her “tops in swaps,” and “the turnabout gal.” While she wasn’t the first person ever to undergo gender changing surgery, she was certainly the first to do so publicly.

Reporters followed her everywhere. In 1967 she wrote “Christine Jorgensen : A personal autobiography.”
