Tony the Tiger

I loved Tony the Tiger! At one point they offered an inflatable Tony and I harrassed my parents until we did whatever it was (a zillion box tops?) to order it. Then I hounded the poor mailman until it came. But what a joy! My own Tony the Tiger!

Kellogg ran a contest to see who would represent their new cereal called “Kellogg’s Sugar Frosted Flakes of Corn.” The contestant were characters Tony the Tiger, Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant, and Newt the Gnu. Only Tony and Katy ever made it to a cereal box.

However, Tony proved the most popular, and the other three were dropped after only a year. Old Tony, MY Tony, became the offical spokesperson, er, tiger in 1953.

His son, Tony Jr., became the trademark of Kellogg’s Frosted Rice cereal. For a while in the 1970’s, Tony had an entire family, including a son, wife, and a daughter, Antoinette.

  1. I have a inflatible Tony the Tiger that says c 1954 by Kellogg Company. It has like sand(or something in base to weight it down). I cannot find it on any site. It still in good condition. Any info would be appreciated.

    Thank you
