U.S. Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield announces that the U.S. Post Office will not ship the 1928 novel Lady Chatterly’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence, due to the pornographic nature of the book’s content.A federal district court judge Frederick Van Pelt Bryan, 55 rules against the Postmaster General in Roth v. the United States. Even though the judge has been deluged with letters calling him a “dirty old man” he states in his 30 page opinion that not only is the book not obscene but also that the Postmaster General is neither qualified nor authorized to judge the obscenity of material to be sent through the mails, that he is empowered only to halt delivery of matter already judged obscene.
