This copy of the first issue of Playboy, autographed by
Joe DiMaggio sold at a Sotheby's auction for over $40,000.
In January
2000, Marilyn would be named Playboy number one Centerfold of the Century.
|
The magazine was originally to be called "Stag
Party" but a last minute of inspiration called up the name, "Playboy".
Uncertain as to its success, the first issue is undated - just in case it had
to serve as the second issue as well.
Although his name appeared nowhere
in the first issue, 27 year old Hugh Hefner's style is evident throughout as he
wrote much of the text for this "pleasure-primer styled to the masculine
taste."
Of note. The first Playmate photographed specifically for the
magazine was Miss June 1955, Eve Meyer, by her then-husband photographer (and
future filmmaker) Russ Meyer.
