The Guggenheim opens in New York City

The Guggenheim opens in New York City Fifth Avenue between 88th and 89th Streets. Designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the museum houses the modern and abstract art collection amassed by deceased copper mogul Solomon Guggenheim. The building has a dramatic circular inner ramp employed by Wright earlier on a smaller scale. Later in 1959, Wright, aged 89, dies.
